The Denver & Rio Grande Western High-Side gondolas were built between 1898 and 1906, and rebuilt in the 1920s. In 1955, construction of an oil pipeline in Farmington New Mexico prompted the Rio Grande to convert over a hundred of the high-side gondolas into idler flat cars, removing the ends and sides to allow the extra-long pipes carried in the pipe gondolas to overhang.
