The Denver & Rio Grande Western High-Side gondolas were built between 1898 and 1906, and rebuilt in the 1920s. In the 1950s, construction of an oil pipeline in Farmington New Mexico prompted the Rio Grande to convert over a hundred of the high-side gondolas into pipe cars, removing the ends and moving the brakewheel to the side to allow the long pipes to fit.
