ExactRail HO Scale: P-S 5277 Waffle Boxcar - Southern - '1977 - As Delivered'
In 1974, the Southern Railway took delivery of 70 ton, 5277 cubic foot capacity box cars from Pullman-Standard. Different from the majority of other cars of the IPD era, the Southern cars had a full set of "waffles"--stamped impressions into the car's side panels which were intended to accommodate lading equipment. Beginning with P-S lot 9725, Southern Railway would eventually roster nearly 5,000 of these box cars. Found anywhere, the Southern P-S 50' 'Waffle' Box Car is the epitome of a signature classic!

About the Southern Paint Scheme:
In March of 1976, the Southern took delivery P-S 5277 Waffle Boxcars from Pullman-Standard Bessemer, AL plant. These came equipped with Slidewell door openers and received additional instruction painted on the doors. During their life, the door openers would frequently be damaged. It was common to see cars with only the rail remaining.
