ScaleTrains HO Scale: Operator Series - EMD SD45 - DCC Ready - Pennsylvania Railroad


The SD45 was the “Big Block Chevy” of EMD’s “1966 Line” of locomotives. In the early 1960s, railroads were requiring more and more horsepower from locomotives to meet the demanding schedules of growing high-priority and intermodal (TOFC) traffic. This equated to faster acceleration and the ability to maintain higher speeds.

  • “Short” stepwells with see-through steps
  • “Early” pattern walkway treadplate
  • Rectangular walkway lights
  • Tall clear wind wings mounted fore and aft of cab side window, both sides of cab
  • Lost-wax brass Leslie SU-3L-LRO horn, center rear of number board housing
  • ­­Large Sinclair Excalibur “ice skate” antenna (communications) mounted on cab roof
  • Standard electrical cabinet seam and bolted alternator door
  • No ECAFB
  • Early (smooth) blower duct housing
  • Early inertial air intake grilles without drip rails
  • Early (short forward taper) extended-range dynamic brakes
  • Chicken-wire pattern radiator intake grill mesh
  • Long walkway duct (three short stanchions)
  • Front and rear straight uncoupling levers with four brackets
  • End handrail set with pilot face mounted outer end rail stanchions
  • 4-hose MU hose clusters with silver gladhands
  • Dual early (angled) deck-mounted MU receptacles, with handrail stanchion-mounted dummy MU receptacle
  • Short “Nub-Bottom” pilot face with full-width single grab iron
  • Tall jacking pads with holes
  • Flush-mount EFCO button
  • Frame-mounted bell
  • Salem air filter (accordion style)
  • 4,000-gallon fuel tank with single fuel filler, single vertical fuel gauges, and round fuel gauge on both tank sides
  • Detailed Flexicoil (low-mount brake cylinder) trucks with Hyatt bearing caps, and sanding lines and brackets
  • Speed recorder second axle, left side
  • ACI labels attached to long hood sides
  • Early (3-Strap) cab signal cabinet on top of battery box, engineer’s side
  • Paint colors matched to Tru-Color Paint: TCP-07 PRR Brunswick Green
