Why Does Your Model Railway Need a Caboose?
The train caboose was actually created as a rolling office for the train conductor and brakemen. The conductor was in charge of making sure the train arrived safely at its destination and that all the cargo was delivered properly. He was in charge of making sure the train was "rail worthy." In order to do these tasks, it became customary in the 1850's to include a small boxcar at the end of the train where the conductor could do his work.
