Saving the Union Pacific Daneburg Subdivision

September 15, 2017 34 Comments

We are pleased to announce that TrainLife.com has purchased Pelle Søeborg's UP Daneburg Subdivision Layout!

Several years ago we were thinking through all of the excellent publications that have existed for train lovers and modelers over the years that are no longer in print, and we had an idea... What if we saved all of this great information by purchasing the rights to out of print magazines and creating a place where modelers could enjoy them?

So we did.

But it was expensive to keep the site up and things started to break... So we decided to start an online model train store to help fund the upkeep of a site and keep the magazines online. After we made the investment to purchase this great archive of magazines it felt like our duty to allow those that wanted them, access to them.

Something similar happened recently when we heard that an icon within the model railroading world, Pelle Søeborg, was going to have to scrap what we consider to be one of the most beautiful layouts out there (and by out there we mean all the way in Denmark!) because of some changes in his life.

We had to figure out a way to save Pelle Søeborg's 'Union Pacific Daneburg Subdivision'!

Wide View of UP Daneburg Subdivision

If you're not familiar with Pelle's layout please see his recently published book: Building a Sectional Layout. Although the ideal situation would be for this layout to remain with the man that built it, we want to ensure that modelers could continue to learn and be inspired by this work of art. The layout will be located in our retail store in Provo, Utah and be available for the public to enjoy.

If you have read the above book you know that this layout was built with the ability to move it in mind, so the process has gone much more smoothly than you would think. That doesn't mean that it hasn't been (or won't be) without it's complications.

We are scheduled to receive this layout via container in about 2 months.

Please sign up for our mailing at the bottom right corner of this page and click the social links to follow us as we will be sending out frequent updates on our progress!

We're thrilled with the opportunity to be stewards of this incredible layout.

This great news and good timing too for all of the conventions coming in the next year or two;
Once everything is in place please, let me know, I’m thrilled that it’s coming to my home state.
Thanks to all of the individuals involved with this project.

This is good to hear about the layout but what about Mr. Soeborg? Is he giving up the hobby? Is his health OK?

It’s great to go to this effort especially with a beautiful layout such as this. I have been a fan of Pelle for many years and he’s been such a great positive influence on our hobby. Here’s to you Pelle and thank you to the guys at Train Life for taking this task on of layout preservation as this one truly deserves it. Hope it all works out for both “camps”.

This has to rate as one of the greatest decisions to have been made for model railroading. I live in Washington, DC and if i had prior knowledge of the possible demise of this layout, i would have contacted the Smithsonian Museum of Transportation and enquired with them to possibly acquire the layout for display. As many of you may well know, the Smithsonian Museum system receives millions of visitiors each year.

Other people have noted how Pelle Soeborg has set a new high standard for Model Railroaders to study and emulate.
Much as John Allen did for an earlier generation using photography as a way to “step back and gain a new perspective” Pelle’s view of North American, and particularly Western Railroading [modern era] has demonstrated yet another perspective for those of us who enjoy model railroading to study and use the lessons he imparts to improve our own work, and enjoyment, of this lifetime hobby.
It gladdens me to read that this superior example of the Model Railroaders Craft will be available for a long time into the future for further study and enjoyment.
We have reached a new high level of craftsmanship, and appreciation of the craftsmanship of fellow practitioners, such that I see a new era dawning of “model railroad preservation” where key elements of well publicized layouts are going on to a new life in a new setting instead of being consigned to the refuse heap when the owner/builder can no longer maintain the premises where their creation first came to life.

I met Blaine, and his great crew earlier this month as I was passing through Provo , and they were wonderful .
They went out of their way to make me feel special, and to my mind, Pelle’s Wonderful layout ,couldn’t have gone to a better place.
Congratulations Blaine.

Pelle has without question set the bar in model railroading. If one didn’t tell you it was a model train …….and you thought it a photo of a real train…..wondering how did you get so close to take that picture. That is the goal one strives for…….Pelle nails it!!! Congratulations Pelle and them purchasing plus shiping for others to enjoy is the ultimate reward for you. So happy for you and you know how many of us modelers will if the day comes are near Provo, will be going there to see it.!!!

Fabulous news, fantastic venue. Pelle’s work captures more of the “gestalt” of American Western railroading than many of us Western Americans can muster. Something about objective viewpoints and not having the same built-in filters, I think. Looking forward to many new photo ops from the layout, and seeing it in person one day soon. Congrats!

This is awesome news. There are so many facets of the hobby today it’s hard to keep up, but finding out about you through this type of information makes me want to not only follow you but shop here as well. Hope you’re able to get it up and running for the 2019 convention, and if it is that may be enough in itself to get me to drive from Texas to see it. Thank you for your commitment to our hobby and to keeping its history alive.

Great news! Always been a fan of Pelle. My layout is based on his Mohave layout from a few years back. Would have been a pity to see this layout dismantled.
